Following the WSJ report, Xiaomi has confirmed that it will be launching its own processor called the ‘Pinecone’ by the end of this month. The Chinese smartphone manufacturer took its official Weibo page to confirm the launch event that is scheduled on Thursday next week, February 28 in Beijing.
Reports claim that Xiaomi had been working on the Pinecone project for over two years. The new system-on-chip (SoC) will be built by Beijing’s Pinecone Electronics company. Rumours suggest that Xiaomi could launch two variants of the new processor- Pinecone V670 that is expected to carry an octa-core Cortex-A53 CPU, meanwhile Pinecone V970 could feature four A73 cores and four A53 cores.
Previous leak reports also suggest that new chipset will make debut in Xiaomi’s Mi 5c, the smartphone that is buzzing on the e-hub quite for some time now. The Xiaomi Mi 5c is tipped to come with the Pinecone V670 which is said to be the mid-range variant of the new Pinecone system on chip (SoC). The Pinecone V670 will supposedly come fabricated with 28nm process technology. The Pinecone V970 meanwhile will reportedly use a 10nm process. Rumours claim that Pinecone V970 the supposedly powerful processor could be launched by the fourth quarter of this year.
Apparently, this is not the first that Xiaomi is working on its own chipsets for its smartphones. The company in the year 2015 signed a deal with Leadcore introduced its Redmi 2A smartphone with Leadcore processor. As Xiaomi plans to shift towards semiconductor business, the company will now join the major chipset manufacturer like Apple, Samsung and Huawei with its in-house processor.
Xiaomi new Pinecone processor launch event will take place at Beijing National Convention Center from 2pm China time (11:30 AM IST).
