Xiaomi’s latest Redmi Note 5 series went on sale yesterday via the online retail platform Flipkart and mi.com. While the company during the smartphone launch promised that it will bring ‘Face Unlock’ for the Pro version by the end of March, to one’s surprise, the Chinese OEM has started rolling out the feature already.
The face unlock feature is being pushed via OTA update and it comes with MIUI v9.2.4 NEIMIEK. The update with a file size of 1.6GB includes significant camera improvements and stability patches besides face unlock. Xiaomi claims that the feature is faster than the fingerprint sensor and that it unlocks the phone within 0.2 seconds.
“If you bought a Redmi Note 5 Pro today, you’ll see an update to v9.2.4 available out of the box – Brings significant camera improvements, stability optimizations, and Face Unlock,” Xiaomi India Product PR Lead, Clinton Jeff tweeted.

If you were able to grab the device in the flash sale, you can check for the update manually by heading to the Settings menu and tapping System Update under ‘About Phone’. Since the file size is heavy it is recommended to download over Wi-Fi to save mobile data.
To recap, Xiaomi launched Redmi Note 4’s successor, the Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro for a price starting at Rs. 9,999 and Rs 13,999 respectively. Both the smartphones flaunt a tall 5.99-inch 18:9 FHD+ display. The Redmi Note 5 Pro features dual rear cameras and offers a bunch of features including Portrait mode.
