Xiaomi seems to be ready to shed the bezels for its entry level series too. The Chinese tech company has announced that it will unveil the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus in China on December 7. The announcement came in the form of a poster that was shared on Weibo. The Weibo post doesn’t reveal much information about the new Redmi 5 series, but it does confirm the handsets to feature 18:9 displays.
Leaks about the upcoming Redmi smartphones have poured in abundance including images and specification sheets. Two Xiaomi smartphones with model number MDE1 and MDT1 have appeared on TENAA (Chinese telecommunications certification authority). One of the devices in question seems to be the Redmi 5, featuring a tall display with slim bezels. The listing reveals a new Xiaomi phone sporting a 5.7-inch HD+ (1440 x 720) 18:9 display. Further, it is seen featuring a 1.8GHz octa-core processor which is speculated to be based on Snapdragon 450 SoC.
The alleged Redmi 5 TENAA list also reveals three RAM and storage options- 2GB RAM/16GB storage, 4GB RAM/32GB storage and 4GB RAM/64GB storage that ties well with the series’ past. The device is listed with a 3200mAh battery. If true, then the upcoming Redmi 5 will have a significantly lower capacity battery compared to Redmi 4’s 4100mAh battery. The device might run Android 7.1.2 Nougat OS out of the box.
The image in the listing shows fingerprint reader placed on the rear panel. The hardware navigation buttons are removed to make room for the elongated screen. Earlier reports have suggested that the Redmi 5 may have a 12MP rear camera and a 5MP shooter at the front.
The Redmi 5 Plus, on the other hand, is tipped to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625 or 630 SoC. The phone is said to come with at least 3GB RAM/32GB onboard storage, 5.9-inch full HD+ 18:9 display and 4100mAh battery. The Redmi 5 Plus is expected to feature a dual camera setup with 16MP+5MP sensors.
While the Redmi 5 series launch in China is still a week away, Xiaomi is all set to launch their new ‘Desh ka Smartphone’ in India tomorrow. The handset which will be a Flipkart exclusive is expected to fall under highly affordable price category. Watch this space tomorrow for more on the same.
