The Xiaomi Redmi 4 has been launched in India today, marking Xiaomi’s relentless push to dominate the budget range of the smartphone segment. In an event held in New Delhi today, the smartphone has been unveiled and will be available in three variants which will support 4G LTE and VoLTE right out of the box.

The Xiaomi Redmi 4 is a smartphone with a metal unibody design with 2.5D curved glass screen. The 5-inch display has a resolution of 1280×720 and the processing is taken care of by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 processor. For photography enthusiasts, there is a 13-megapixel camera on the back with a lens aperture of f/2.2. The front camera is a 5-megapixel shooter, with the same aperture. The smartphone is powered by a 4100mAh battery, which if it is anywhere as good as the one we saw on the Redmi 3S Prime, will work in the phone’s favour. All three phones also come with a fingerprint sensor.

Keeping all the above specifications the same, Xiaomi has broken the Redmi 4 lineup into three variants; 2GB RAM with 16GB storage, 3GB RAM with 32GB storage and 4GB RAM with 64GB storage. All three phones will support storage expansion via microSD card (maximum 128GB).  The variants are priced at Rs. 6,999, Rs.8,999 and Rs. 10,999 respectively. All variants will run MIUI 8, based on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. Unfortunately, the 4GB/64GB variant won’t go on sale till the end of June 2017.

Speaking at the event, Xiaomi Vice President and India Managing Director, Manu Jain said, “Redmi 3S was one of the most popular smartphones last year. We sold more than 4 million units of Redmi 3S during the life cycle of the product. Today we are thrilled to announce Redmi 4, which is an upgrade to Redmi 3S. Each of our Redmi devices have redefined the affordable smartphone segment in India, and we believe Redmi 4 too will meet the expectations of Mi Fans users who want high quality devices at an affordable price.”

The Xiaomi Redmi 4 will be sold exclusively via Amazon and Mi.com starting May 23, 2017. The phone will be available for purchase noon onwards on May 23, and given how quickly Xiaomi’s budget phones tend to sell out, we expect the phone to be out of stock rather quickly upon launch.
