Xiaomi has sent out invites for its press event on March 20. The invite doesn’t reveal anything on what the company is going to launch at the event but rather shows off a teaser that reads ‘Time to get smArter’. Going by the image it highlights on the symbol 4 and A which are marked red indicating on a new smartphone, most probably the Redmi 4A.
Notably, this is not the first time that the Redmi 4A will get unveiled. The smartphone was first announced in China back in November last year.
In terms of specifications, (as seen in the Chinese market) the Redmi 4A has a 5-inch IPS LCD (1280×720 pixels) display with a pixel density of 294ppi. The phone is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor clocked at 1.4GHz. It comes with 2GB RAM, 16GB of internal storage and microSD card support (expandable up to 256GB). As for the camera, it features a 13-megapixel primary camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera for selfies. It runs on MIUI 8 based Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The Redmi 4A has a battery backup of 3120mAh.
The smartphone is priced at 499Yuan (around Rs. 5000) and is available in Gold, Rose Gold and Dark Grey colour options in China. If it is launched at a similar price in India, it might create a major segment disruption. At this point, very few brands offer products that are well below the Rs 10,000 mark in the Indian smartphone industry. With plans to boost offline sales as well, this might do a lot for the Chinese company’s fortunes.
The Xiaomi event in India will be hosted by the Xiaomi India VP Manu Jain and Product Lead Jai Mani. At this point, we can only speculate about what the launch might be about. It might either be the Redmi 4A (which in all likelihood seems to be the case), or, Xioami might launch a slew of new accessories as well.
