Xiaomi is all geared up to bring a new device to India next week. The company has started sending press invites for a smartphone launch event that will take place in New Delhi on Valentine’s Day.
Besides the time & venue, the invite shows a big number 5 which indicates that Xiaomi will unveil device from 5 series perhaps the Redmi 5. From what we can observe, the image sketches out a white shadow line beneath the number 5 in a camera frame, suggesting that Xiaomi might have not just one but two handsets to unveil here. Also, the launch happens on Valentine’s day which is more about couples that flying solo (well, for most), further hinting at a launch of a couple of devices.
Reportedly, Xiaomi launched the Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus in Malaysia last week. Both the handsets were announced at a price of RM 679 (roughly Rs 11200) and RM 749 (around Rs 12,400) respectively. In case Xiaomi is planning to launch the same devices in India next week, we expect the new Redmi 5 series handsets to carry a slightly lower price tag, especially for the Redmi 5.
The highlight of the Redmi 5 and the Redmi 5 Plus is that they flaunt 18:9 displays. In terms of specifications, Xiaomi Redmi 5 sport a 5.7-inch HD+ display with a resolution of 1440 x 720 pixels. Meanwhile, the Redmi 5 Plus features a 5.99-inch full-HD+ display with a resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels.
The Redmi 5 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 450 mobile platform paired with 2GB/3GB RAM and 16GB/32GB storage. The Redmi 5 Plus has a Snapdragon 625 SoC and 3GB/4GB RAM with 32GB/64GB storage respectively. The handsets have dedicated microSD slot for storage expansion. The Redmi 5 packs a 3300mAh battery while the Plus variant has a slightly bigger 4000mAh battery. On the software front, the smartphones run the company proprietrary MIUI 9 custom ROM based on Android 7.1 Nougat.
As for the imaging sensors, Xiaomi Redmi 5 and 5 Plus have similar camera sensors sporting 12-megapixel primary camera along with an LED flash. Up front, there’s a 5-megapixel selfie camera with a soft-light selfie flash.
It also remains to be seen if the Redmi 5 Plus will be called that or Note 5 in India.
