WhatsApp could be on the verge of announcing UPI-enabled payment feature anytime soon, as per a new report. It’s been quite some time since the feature is reportedly in works. Now, folks at GizmoTimes claim to have received UPI payment feature in WhatsApp Messenger for Android Beta version 2.18.41. Despite updating to WhatsApp Android beta version 2.18.44 ourselves, we couldn’t spot this feature.
The report further goes to mention that WhatsApp may have rolled it out to select beta users (seems like server-sided) irrespective of their WhatsApp beta app version. However, we have no concrete details at the time of writing this about its launch timeline. We have gotten in touch with WhatsApp for a comment and shall update our story once we receive a response.
To send money to someone over UPI, you might have to go to his/her chat and tap a paperclip icon at the bottom right corner (similar to how you attach audio, documents, pictures, contacts and Google Maps location coordinates).
WhatsApp announced in their blog post last month that it currently serves over 1.3 billion active users worldwide including over 200 million of them across India. WhatsApp UPI integration could be a game changer in online payment and banking methods due to such a massive user base.
