Facebook-owned instant messaging service WhatsApp will now support Apple’s CarPlay. The first third-party app to make through in the Apple arena, WhatsApp has entered the company ‘automotive platform’ with their version 2.18.20 update for iOS.
The version once installed on your iPhone, WhatsApp will show up a dedicated icon on the CarPlay dash interface for easy access. Earlier Siri was required to interact with the WhatsApp app on iPhone, but with CarPlay integration, users can now see a message as and when it pops up on their handset.
Users will be able to check messages through a badge icon and tap Siri to speak the contents of the message out loud. Notifications will appear on the CarPlay screen along with the sender’s name. A multitasking bar will also show up in the CarPlay sidebar that will enable quick switch between tasks while on the move. You can send messages as well by dictating them to Siri.
While WhatsApp in CarPlay will work as other standard messaging apps, the downside of the integration is that you won’t be able to scroll through a list of conversation to search for a specific message. The integration doesn’t seem to be listed in Apple changelog. However, iCulture notes that it will show on CarPlay once you update the WhatsApp app to the latest version.
The CarPlay technology has been incorporated in many new cars and even tech companies are offering ‘CarPlay-supported in-car audio systems’ to allow drivers use their phone feature safely while driving. And with the WhatsApp integration at least users won’t get distracted each time a message pop up on their iOS device. The new update is available for download on the App Store.
