When the JioPhone made its way into the Indian market, it lacked two of the most used applications in India – WhatsApp and Facebook. Though you could use Facebook via the internet browser provided on the device, it didn’t come anywhere close to providing the experience a native app could. To rectify this, Reliance Jio has worked with Facebook to get the Facebook app on to the device. There’s still no WhatsApp support though.
The app will be available to all JioPhones starting February 14. Facebook has gone ahead and developed a special version of their app for KaiOS, the operating system being used on the JioPhone. In a press note Reliance Jio said, this will benefit potential 50 crore feature-phone users in India. To get the app, users can visit the JioAppStore and download the same.
“As promised, JioPhone will be home to the world’s leading applications, starting with Facebook. Jio, the world’s largest mobile data network, is built to empower every Indian with the power of data and JioPhone is an integral part of this Jio movement,”
said Akash Ambani, director, Jio in a press statement.
The new Facebook app designed for the JioPhone brings support for push notifications, video and links to external content. The app has also been optimized for the smaller display and use of the cursor function.
According to previous reports, Reliance Jio is also in talks with WhatsApp to get the app for its users. Now that Facebook has made a tailored app for the platform, the day may not be far as Facebook owns WhatsApp.
