As we still recover from the slew of announcements from yesterday’s pre-Mobile World Congress events, Sony has today announced four new smartphones, the Sony Xperia XZ Premium, the Sony Xperia XZs, the Sony Xperia XA1 and the Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra. In case you’re wondering what each phone has to offer, follow this article all the way to the end

Sony Xperia XZ Premium
The Sony Xperia XZ Premium is the new flagship from the company, sporting a 5.5-inch 4K HDR display. The Sony Xperia Z5 was a phone ahead of its times, offering a 4K display when 4K content wasn’t commonplace. However both Amazon Video and Netflix have announced recently that they will be streaming 4K HDR content through their services, making the Xperia XZ Premium’s display the only one that can leverage it on a mobile device. The heart of the Sony Xperia XZ Premium is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, making it the first phone to be officially announced with Qualcomm’s upcoming SoC. The phone also sports 4GB of RAM ad 64GB of on-board storage and a 3230mAh battery.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the Sony Xperia XZ Premium is the camera. Sony has embedded a new technology into the Xperia XZ Premium, something it calls the Motion Eye camera system. This is powered by a new 19 megapixel stacked CMOS sensor offering 960 fps of slow motion recording thanks to a built-in DRAM layer. This is most likely the same sensor we reported about back in February. According to the Sony press release, “Plus Predictive Capture stays one step ahead and automatically starts buffering images when it detects motion even before you press the button, so you can find a moment your eye may just have missed from a selection of up to four shots taken a second before you clicked. On top of this, the new 19MP high resolution sensor has 19% larger pixels to capture more light and provides exceptional detail and sharp images even in low-light and backlit conditions.”

The phone comes in a glassy finish, available in two colours; Luminous Chrome and Deepsea Black. The phone sports Gorilla Glass 5 protection on the front along with water and dust resistance. The Sony Xperia XZ Premium is slated for a late spring 2017 release with no word on pricing yet.

Sony Xperia XZs
The Sony XZs is a limited market release from Sony, a smaller companion to the XZ Premium. The Xperia XZs doesn’t come with the 4K HDR display, but instead has a more modest Full HD panel. It is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 paired with 4GB of RAM and a 2900mAh battery. Interestingly, the XZs will ship with the same Motion Eye imaging system like the one on the XZ Premium. The phone will come in three colours and will also get the water and dust resistance just likes the more premium phone. The phone is a limited market release, with no word on whether it will come to India or not. If it does, there will be three colours to choose from; Ice Blue, Warm Silver and Black.

Sony Xperia XA1 & XA1 Ultra
The USP of the Xperia XA1 & the XA1 Ultra will be their 1/2.3 inch sensor that sports a resolution of 23 megapixels. On the front, there is a 8 megapixel wide angle camera for selfie duties. The XA1 has a 5-inch edge-to-edge 720p display while the XA1 Ultra has a full HD 6-inch panel. Both the phones are powered by Mediatek’s Helio P20 SoC along with 3GB RAM on the XA1 and 4GB of RAM on the XA1 Ultra. The phones come with 2300mAh and 2700mAh batteries respectively. Xperia XA1 and Xperia XA1 Ultra will roll out from Spring 2017 with Android N at launch and come in various colours; White, Black, Pink and Gold. There is no word on pricing yet.
