As per a report, Samsung has unveiled its much rumoured foldable smartphone at CES 2018. The report states that apart from the Smart TVs, Computers and Home Appliances, Samsung in a private meeting with a select few individuals showcased its first foldable smartphone.
As per the report by ETNews, a South Korean news publication, Samsung in a private briefing also shared the timeline of the product launch. The device is said to go into production by the end of 2018. This version of the foldable smartphone is an upgraded version of the one showcased at CES 2017.
“Samsung Display said it has developed a 7.3-inch foldable panel with plans to start production later this year,” wrote ETNews citing a source.
The report also stated that Samsung’s foldable smartphone features an in-folding curvature of 1R and an out-folding curvature of 5R, which is only possible if Samsung either has two separate displays like the TE Axon M which is the world’s first foldable smartphone, or it has utilised a plastic material for the display with a lot of flexibility.
Apple, back in November, filed a patent for a flexible portion to be added to a smartphone. Additionally, a previous report claims that Apple is currently working with LG Displays to manufacture a foldable display. Samsung seems to want to beat Apple in the race to launch a foldable smartphone.
Back during the Galaxy S8 series launch, DJ Koh, Samsung’s mobile chief had said that Samsung was aiming to introduce a foldable smartphone in its Galaxy Note smartphone series by as early as 2018.
