Samsung’s Unpacked event in New York was not just about the new Galaxy S8, but it also included everything all around. How around? 360 degrees!
Okay, we apologise for that. Nevertheless, it must be pointed out that Samsung has announced the 2017 iteration of the Gear 360 along with other accessories from Samsung.
The new Gear 360 has updated its design language, and looks like a device that is ultraportable and easy enough to shoot even handheld 360 degree videos, which could make amateur 360 videos easier to shoot. The design also signifies good ergonomics and convenience for shooting live videos.
That is a good thing, because the new Samsung Gear 360 offers 4K video recording, and also supports real-time content streaming. The live videos can be streamed in up to 2K resolution, and users will be able to share the videos directly to social media portals such as YouTube and Facebook. Expect live panoramic videos from your friends who buy this device.
In terms of optics, the new Gear 360 is equipped with 8.4 megapixel sensors, and has dual f/2.2 fisheye lenses (one on each side) which Samsung calls Bright Lens. It shoots high-resolution pictures and videos all around.
The interesting thing to note about the Gear 360 is that it is not just compatible with Samsung’s own Galaxy S8, S8+, Galaxy S7, S7 edge, Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+, Galaxy A5 (2017) and Galaxy A7 (2017), but also Apple devices such as iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus and iPhone SE.
Samsung has not announced the availability and the pricing for the new Gear 360 model. However, Samsung has announced a small update for its Gear VR, which is a byproduct of Samsung’s partnership with Oculus. The new Gear VR is the same one that was initially showcased at MWC earlier this year, complete with a new handheld controller, and has been priced at $129. The controller can also be bought separately for older Gear VR models. The new Gear VR will ship with 20 games as part of the bundle, and the number will more than double in the coming months.
