There is a lot of hype around the feature phone, given its price-point which feels like it may be too good to be true. We reached out to a source within Reliance Jio to confirm whether the phone was real or not.

Is the phone real or not?
Our source confirmed to us that the phone is 100 percent real. The leaked device will continue to carry the LYF branding and is primarily targeted at lowering the entry price into the connected world. Our source said that the phone won’t actually cost Rs. 500, but will instead be priced at a little over a Rs. 1000. The company, however, plans to release the phone with various bundles and offers which could bring the effective price of the phone down to Rs. 500. The details of this are still being worked out.

A new category in itself, the Smart-Feature Phone
Our source said, that the new LYF phone will create a new category of phones, a hybrid between feature and smartphones. The device won’t have a touch screen and won’t be a smartphone as we understand it. We have seen in the leaked video of the phone that it is capable of running Jio’s own apps. The new phone is also said to support Facebook and Whatsapp.

So far as per the leaked reports, we know that the phone will come with a 2.4-inch display. It will be running Jio’s own applications along with a few other like Facebook and WhatsApp. The leaks have also suggested that the phone will come with Spreadtrum or Qualcomm chipsets. The reports also had suggested a July 21 launch, when Mukesh Ambani takes the stage at the Reliance Annual General Meeting.
