Reliance Jio might again rock the smartphone industry if recent rumours are to be believed. It has been rumoured that the company might be launching a Rs. 500 4G VoLTE feature phone on July 21. On that day, Reliance will be holding its Annual General Meeting. Today, two leaks have come in revealing the images, specifications, and features of the alleged Reliance Jio feature phone. This leak was reported by TechPP and the video has been sourced from the YouTube channel of PhoneRadar.
Specifications and Features
According to the report, the phone will be launched under the company’s LYF brand, which currently sells 4G smartphones. The report says that the phone will feature a 2.4-inch colour display along with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of Internal Storage expandable up to 128GB with the help of a microSD card. The phone will also come with dual SIM functionality (Nano + Standard). As for the camera, the phone will feature a 2-megapixel rear camera and a VGA front camera. The phone will also have video calling capabilities. As for connectivity, it has been reported to have FM Radio, Bluetooth 4.1 + LE, and video calling. All this is to be backed by a 2,000mAh battery.
It has been reported that the Jio feature phone will come with KAI OS, a highly customised version of the Firefox OS. The phone will also be featuring an app store named KaiOS Plus, along with an integrated voice assistant with support for Indian languages. However, this claim could be false because a digital assistant needs a lot of RAM and processing power which this alleged Jio Feature phone does not have. A report by Telecom Talk has claimed that the phone will also feature Wi-Fi tethering which will allow multiple users to use the internet. However, TechPP claims that the phone will utilise app-specific USB tethering.
The leaked images also show that the feature phone will have a 1.2GHz dual-core processor without any branding. Previously, reports claimed that the phone will come with a Spreadtrum or a Qualcomm chipset.
We had covered a previous report from HSBC, which stated that Reliance Jio will be subsidising the phone to Rs. 500 and selling it in India. It has been previously reported that the company has placed an order of around 18-20 million devices with Chinese vendors like the Zhejiang Techain Electronics Technology Co., Shenzhen CHINO-E Communication Co, Crave and Megaphone. It is being expected that Reliance Jio will launch the phone during its Annual General Meeting on July 21, but will go on sale in August.
