MediaTek held a curtain raiser event for 2018 in New Delhi where it unveiled a lot of its new plans for the Indian market. However, the one that piqued our interest was its partnership with Reliance Jio. Under this new partnership, both companies will be working hand-in-hand to develop an affordable smartphone, which will run Google’s Android 8.1 Oreo Go.
Android Go is an initiative by Google, under which it provides a lightweight and watered down version of the Android operating system to manufacturers to produce not so powerful smartphones at a lower cost.
“India is growth intensive, a market of immense opportunities with its own set of aspirations and needs. We continue to intensify our technology collaboration in India, even beyond smartphones, and recognise its importance in the global marketplace,”
said T L Lee, General Manager, Wireless Communication, MediaTek in a media statement.
The new smartphone which will be launched soon in the Indian market will be sold alongside the JioPhone which comes with an effective price of Rs 0 at all the Reliance Digital stores and Jio Stores across the country. In case you didn’t know, people now don’t need to register for the JioPhone as previously stated by the company and can get them directly from any stores across the country over the counter. Coming back to the topic, neither companies have given out any details about the new smartphone (price, specifications, availability).
MediaTek said that the MT6739 and MT6580 are its latest chipsets that will be supporting Android Go. Last month the company had stated that it had partnered with Google to support its Android Go initiative and will be releasing the first generation of Android Go smartphones in partnerships with various manufacturers around the globe within the first quarter of 2018.
This might also be the time-frame when this Indian partnership between MediaTek and Reliance Jio bears fruits. We expect these new devices to cost less and empower those that are yet own a smartphone due to cost constraints.
MediaTek at the curtain raiser showcased its MT6739 chipset which supports Android 8.1 Oreo Go alongside dual cameras, face unlock, and dual 4G VoLTE capabilities. This chipset as per the company will be paired along with 512MB and 1GB RAM smartphones. Other than Reliance Jio, Micromax and Nokia are also said to be developing smartphones that will run Android Go operating system. Whether they are using this chipset is yet to be confirmed.
