    • OnePlus 5 confirmed to get Face Unlock feature
    • OnePlus plans to roll out the feature for OnePlus 3 & 3T too

OnePlus confirmed last week that OnePlus 5T’s popular feature, Face Unlock, will make its way to its predecessor, OnePlus 5.

Pei in the official OnePlus forum mentioned that the company will push an open beta build of the Face Unlock to the OnePlus 5. Citing this to be an ‘early test run’, it will let OnePlus 5 owners (a small number though) test the feature themselves and provide their feedback, while OnePlus will work on eliminating bugs. Following this, OnePlus will push the official release of the Face Unlock to all OnePlus 5 units.

While OnePlus has confirmed that the Face Unlock feature is coming to the OnePlus 5, it might not be the only model to get it. And therein lies the confusion.

Recently, Pei opened up a poll on the OnePlus forum asking whether OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T users want the feature too.

Carl Pei said, “You all inspired us to bring Face Unlock to the OnePlus 5. When you share your thoughts and feedback, you impact how we build and maintain our devices. In the spirit of building together, we’d also like to ask our OnePlus 3 and 3T users: Do you want Face Unlock too?

Surprisingly, one thread on the forums shows about 50 pages of people talking about the Unlock feature on these two models, so it is a clear indication that OnePlus 3 & 3T users are seeking it. Now, didn’t the OnePlus 3 and 3T get Face Unlock feature last month itself with the Oxygen OS 5.0 update?

In fact, the users of those 2 phones running stock Android Nougat had the feature already. So is Mr Pei promising a feature that already exists in the older versions of OnePlus phones? But going by the enthusiastic replies by users on the thread, it seems even they weren’t aware of its existence. We have already reached out to Carl Pei and OnePlus seeking clarification. We will update you once the confusion is cleared.

In related news, the Chinese smartphone maker just yesterday confirmed that its latest flagship model OnePlus 5T will receive Google’s all-new Android Oreo open beta soon. A specific date has not been revealed yet but users can expect the release in the next few days.
