The hottest month of the year is about to get very exciting for the Indian consumer, we gear up for the launch of OnePlus 5. After a series of leaks and official statements by the company CEO, today, OnePlus India has sent out an official statement, claiming that the OnePlus 5 will indeed sport the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, but also asserted that the OnePlus 5 will be the first smartphone with the chip in India. It should be noted that the Qualcomm Snapdragon first debuted in the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+, however, the India variant of those devices run on Exynos 8895 and not the Snapdragon 835. Therefore, the medal for being ‘the first smartphone with the new Qualcomm flagship chip’ is still up for grabs and OnePlus seems to be making a move for it.
The press release from OnePlus India claims “OnePlus 5 is to become the first flagship in India to launch with Qualcomm Snapdragon 835.” Talking about the partnership between OnePlus and Qualcomm, Sanjay Mehta, Senior Vice President, Qualcomm and also a OnePlus star, said, “OnePlus creates every smartphone as if it’s creating a piece of art & not just making a mass-produced product. All of OnePlus smartphones have so far been powered by premium Snapdragon mobile platforms, ensuring that every generation of OnePlus handsets deliver a powerful performance ”.
While an official statement corroborates that the OnePlus 5 release in India is just around the corner, what we do know for a fact is that the Sony Xperia XZ Premium is also on the cusp of being launched. We confirmed this from three different Sony dealers, who couldn’t give us an exact time-frame or the price for the phone, but did say that the Sony Xperia XZ Premium is going to hit shelves by the middle of June. The Sony Xperia XZ Premium will also sport the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, along with 4GB of RAM.
To be the first smartphone in the market with the flagship SoC is an achievement for a company, but the end user, it makes little difference. Eventually, both OnePlus 5 and Sony Xperia XZ Premium will be in the market within a few weeks of each other and consumers would be able to choose which of the two to buy. While one has a history of offering great performance-to-price ratio, the other has a lineage of amazing features when it comes to display and audio.

The OnePlus 5 will definitely sport the flagship Qualcomm chip but is rumoured to have 8GB of RAM instead of 6GB along with also coming in a 256GB storage variant. The Sony Xperia XZ Premium comes with only 4GB of RAM in comparison but sports a 4K HDR display and offers 960fps slow motion recording that we tested in our Sony Xperia XZs primary camera review.
The two phones will appeal to very different kinds of audiences, but anyone who is keen on having the latest processor power their next flagship smartphone would be happy to know that within the next few weeks, they’ll be able to choose between not one, but two flagships.
