OnePlus had already confirmed that its previous flagship OnePlus 3 and 3T shall receive Google’s upcoming Android O update. The company has now said that Android O will be the last major update to the OnePlus 3 and the 3T. In a QnA session posted on the OnePlus forum last week, Oliver Z the company’s Head of Product confirmed that these handsets will not get any major software update following Android O.
“Android O is going to be the last Android version update we’ll release for OP3/3T. We’ll continue to release security patch updates for the foreseeable future, and offer support for individual application updates,” Oliver Z said.
The OnePlus 3 and the 3T at present receive Open Beta updates once every month. Oliver however, has said that the company will end the Open Beta Program for these two models after the Android O update is released.
“After the OP3/3T have been updated to Android O, we’ll start moving the Open Beta Program from OP3/3T to OP5,” the post read.
The OnePlus 3 and 3T were released running Android Marshmallow. The phones received Android 7.1.1 Nougat earlier this year and OnePlus recently rolled out beta updates that brought parallel apps feature for the smartphones. The feature basically enables users to run a ‘parallel version’ of the same app by using a separate account. OnePlus in its forum said that it plans to launch the August security patch for OnePlus 3 and 3T following the OxygenOS version 4.5 release which will be rolled out in a month or two.
Given that the ‘flagship killer’ OnePlus 3T was released less than a year, just a year of support doesn’t sound a good move from OEM like OnePlus. The Chinese smartphone maker somewhat gave a similar treatment to its other devices-OnePlus 2 and OnePlus X. The company in June this year announced that its two-generation old OnePlus smartphone shall not receive Android Nougat update which was rather disappointing for OnePlus 2 users.
