OnePlus on Tuesday held an AMA (ask me anything) session on Reddit. While the company’s CEO Pete Lau last month confirmed that the OnePlus 3T and OnePlus 3 would receive the new Android O software, he didn’t mention any time frame for the update. However, one of the OnePlus employees who a part of the AMA has confirmed that the Android O update for these smartphones will arrive “within this year”. Of course, the devices will be updated to the latest Android version only after Google launches the final build.
To recall, Google announced the release of Android O Beta at its annual developer I/O conference last month. Reports speculate that the new Android version might make its debut with ‘last year’s’ Google Pixel and Pixel successors instead of the upcoming Google Pixel 2 devices. Further reports suggest that the new Android operating system would be named Oatmeal Cookie instead of Oreo.
While OnePlus has claimed the Android O update will be pushed to the OnePlus 3 and 3T by the end of the year, it would be interesting to see if the Chinese OEM actually lives up to its promise given its track record.
Last year, during an interview with XDA Developers, Carl Pei, when asked about software updates, said, “I think we’ve always taken updates very seriously. If you look at all the Android brands on the market, we are probably the one with the most vocal users. And that is not lost upon us. And it’s just, if you look at the OnePlus One, it wasn’t our own software. OnePlus 2 was the first time we started shipping our own software. So, going from 0 to 1 is kind of hard. Bringing a lot of different people from different backgrounds, different companies, it takes time for them to find common processes and ways of working. So, it took a little bit of time I think […] From the cadence of our updates, from the cadence of how fast we can implement feedback. I’m pretty positive about what’s going on.”
Notably, the company back in June 2016 promised Nougat update for the OnePlus 2, however, recently they backtracked on their word and announced that they will not push a Nougat based ROM for the ageing smartphone. Further, OnePlus X which was launched with a Lollipop based ROM, official updates for this model stopped after the release of Android Marshmallow based ROM. Given its track record, will OnePlus be able to keep its promise to the year end deadline for the OnePlus 3 and 3T?
