OnePlus with its latest flagship smartphone, the OnePlus 5T, introduced a lot of new features. One of the more interesting ones, Face Unlock seems to have made its way to the OnePlus 3 and 3T. Previously, the same feature was found in the Android 8.0 Oreo beta for the OnePlus 5. This has come as a surprise, as the company did not mention this anywhere, not even in the changelog for the OxygenOS 5.0 update for OnePlus 3 or 3T.
The OnePlus 3 and 3T users who have updated to the OxygenOS 5.0 need to enable it in the settings. To enable the Face Unlock feature users will need to head to Settings > Security & fingerprint > Smart Lock, after which they will see an option for trusted devices, which when pressed will allow the users to scan a face for face unlock. Users can return to this page to better the accuracy of the face unlock. Unlike the fingerprint sensor, this feature doesn’t work when the screen is off.
An important thing to take note of about this feature is that it isn’t as secure as a pattern, PIN or password. Anyone with similar looks may be able to unlock the device. However, one good thing is that the data used to recognise a user’s face is stored locally on the smartphone. This feature isn’t as secure as the iPhone X’s Face ID, which uses infrared rays to detect finer facial details, whereas OnePlus simply uses the camera module to do so.
