OnePlus 2 users should be seeing an OTA update available for their devices, but it isn’t the update that they have been waiting for. OnePlus had promised that phone would be receiving Android Nougat via an update to their OxygenOS ROM, but this update isn’t Nougat.
The new update bumps the version number to OxygenOS 3.5.8 and brings with it a few minor bug-fixes, but most importantly, the latest March 2017 security patch. As per the official post on the OnePlus forums, the entire changelog consists of just a handful of fixes, mostly data and connectivity related. There’s also improved audio compatibility, but we’re not really sure what that means. The entire changelog for the OxygenOS 3.5.8 can be found below.
As with every update, OnePlus is stating that the OTA will be a rolling update and will not be visisble to all the users at the moment. Instead, users will see the update becoming avaialble on their devices within a day or two. For those who generally prefer to just flash their phones with the update, OnePlus has not yet released the full OxygenOS 3.5.8 ROM and neither is the OTA incremental update zip file available for download. Chances are, both of these should be avaialble to download from the forum within a day and in case you are not seeing the update on your phone, you could just flash the updated ZIP. In case you do decide to go the manual update route, please know that you should do so at your own risk, and make sure your data is all backed up.
While OnePlus has been quick to develop the Nougat ROM for OnePlus 3T and OnePlus 3, both phones now running on the Android 7.1.1 version, development on OnePlus 2 has practically come to a standstill. The last update to the OnePlus two was OxygenOS 3.5.6 on December 30th 2016, which was a HOTFIX for persistent network issues. The development of the Nougat ROMs for the OnePlus 2 is currently being undertaken by various custom ROM teams such as Lineage, however, their products aren’t bug-free.
While it is good to know that the OnePlus finaly has the latest security update, the update to OxygenOS 4.0 (Nougat) still seems like a distant dream for most.
