HMD Global has gone ahead and slashed the price for both Nokia 5 and Nokia 8 smartphones in the Indian market. Now the Nokia 5 which was initially launched at Rs 13,499 for the 3GB RAM variant will now be available for Rs 12,499. Whereas the Nokia 8 which initially cost Rs 36,999 will now sell for Rs 28,999. Interestingly, even after the official announcement, prices for both the devices are yet to be updated on online retailer Flipkart. However, Amazon India is showing the new rates.
As for the specifications, the Nokia 5 sports a 5.2-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor coupled with 3GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage expandable up to 128GB via a microSD card.
As for the camera, the device sports a 13-megapixel primary camera with an aperture of f/2.0 along with an LED flash. On the front, it has an 8-megapixel camera for selfies. All of this is backed by a 3,000mAh battery and runs Google’s Android 7.1.1 Oreo operating system out of the box. However, Nokia has promised an Android 8.0 Oreo update for this device.
Even at it’s new price point, there are too many better phones that offer lot more than what the Nokia 5 does. Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 and Honor 7x come to mind straight away that can decimate the Nokia in almost every aspect. Alternately, phones with specs similar to Nokia 5, like Xiaomi Redmi 4 can be purchased for a good Rs 3,500 cheaper. Even that has more storage and higher capacity battery as compared to this Nokia. It would have made more sense to drop the price under the 10K mark after this price cut.
The Nokia 8 sports a 5.3-inch 2K display. It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor coupled with 4GB of RAM along with 64GB of internal storage expandable up to 256GB via microSD card. All of this is backed by a 3,090mAh non-removable battery and runs Google’s Android 8.0 Oreo operating system.
As for the camera, the device sports a dual camera setup on the rear, both with 13-megapixel sensors and Carl Zeiss optics. As for the front camera, it has a single 13-megapixel shooter for selfies.
Unlike the Nokia 5, the Nokia 8’s price cut is very impressive and strategic. With it’s new price tag, the Nokia 8 can give some serious competition to the popular affordable flagship phones like OnePlus 5T and Honor V10. The competition at the 30K mark just got hotter with Nokia throwing its hat in the ring.
