According to reports, Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio is planning to shut down JioPhone production and bring a new Android smartphone instead. Responding to Techook’s request for a comment, Jio spokesperson said that the company will soon announce the next JioPhone booking date. “JioPhone, ‘India ka smartphone’ is committed to fulfilling the country’s digital vision. Jio welcomes the initial 6 million Indians who are moving to digital life,” Jio spokesperson added.
The company is currently finishing up its first batch of deliveries, and when it is done they will open up the pre-bookings for a second round. However, the pre-bookings for the device have been closed for around two months making us think that the company might make changes in the device before the second phase registrations start. Interestingly, during the launch event, the company said that they aim to ship out five million units of the feature phone per week.
Reliance Jio JioPhone runs on KaiOS which is based on the Firefox OS. The device comes with all of the Jio apps including MyJio, JioMusic, JioTV, JioCinema, and more. However, the device currently doesn’t support social media apps like WhatsApp and Facebook. It is a 4G VoLTE enabled feature phone which comes with an effective price of Rs. 0. However, the users will have to pay an initial amount of Rs. 1,500 as security which can be claimed back after three years when the device is returned.
