According to a report, Twitter is testing a new Twitter Lite app in that consumes less data. Designed for countries with poor internet connectivity, Twitter Lite app is being tested in Philippines at the time of writing this. However, it isn’t clear at this moment whether the app will hit other regions soon.
“The test of the Twitter Lite app in the Google Play Store in the Philippines is another opportunity to increase the availability of Twitter in this market. The Philippines market has slow mobile networks and expensive data plans, while mobile devices with limited storage are still very popular there. Twitter Lite helps to overcome these barriers to usage for Twitter in the Philippines,” Twitter spokesperson told TechCrunch.
Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey in the company’s quarterly earnings call a few weeks ago said that Twitter has been working on some early foundational work, and Twitter Lite app represents one of them. “Especially in places like India, we found that our app was just way too slow to access,” said Dorsey. So, it appears that Twitter Lite app could roll out in India as well.
TechCrunch reports citing Twitter spokesperson that Twitter Lite app consumes up to 70 percent less data, taking up less than 1MB in size. In Philippines, it is reportedly listed as a separate app in the Google Play Store, compatible with all the devices running Android 5.0 and up. It is also said to support both for English and Filipino on both 2G and 3G networks.
