According to 91Mobiles, Airtel’s yet another 4G smartphone could be in works. The telecom network operators have reportedly partnered a domestic smartphone maker Lava in order to announce a new 4G VoLTE-enabled smartphone.
The report claims citing its sources that Airtel-Lava partnered smartphone will be available at an effective price of Rs 1,699 as opposed to Rs 0 on JioPhone. But since they are totally opposite in terms of functioning and form factor altogether, the comparison becomes literally pointless. The device, however, is said to cost Rs 3,500 to consumers. If the report is to be believed, Lava’s policy will be similar to that of Karbonn A40 Indian, which users are eligible to receive cashback against on timely manner for a limited period. Similar to the likes of Karbonn, Lava’s offerings will include bundled data and voice benefits.
In terms of technical features and specifications, the Lava phone may not be much different than Karbonn, at least that’s what’s reported as of now. It’s said to sport either a 4.5-inch or a 5-inch screen, Android Nougat, a quad-core SoC, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, 2MP main camera, VGA selfie camera, and a 1,400mAh battery. Airtel is also reported mulling over partnering a homegrown 4G handsets brand for another feature phone, which is expected to be priced somewhere between Rs 1,399 and Rs 1,699.
The popularity of feature phones and affordable, entry-level 4G smartphones has been on the rise ever since Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Limited unveiled a JioPhone at its annual general meeting (AGM) in Mumbai a few months ago. Since then, many telecom players are said to challenge JioPhone. Airtel, is the only direct competitor to Jio as far as feature phone market is concerned at this point, is regularly posing new challenges to Jio with regards to tariffs, plans or anything else.
