Motorola, as promised, has announced its new ‘bold phone’- the Moto Z2 Play in the US. The successor to last year’s popular Moto Z Play features a 5.5-inch full HD (1080×1920 resolution) Super AMOLED display and it is compatible with Moto Mods ‘ecosystem’.
The new smartphone is priced at $499 (around Rs. 32,200) in the US and it will be made available this summer on Verizon or unlocked from Motorola’s website. The company has not shared any word on India launch yet.
Talking about the design, Motorola this time has brought a sleek phone compared to the original model. The new Moto Z2 Play comes with an upgraded processor, a new camera and extra RAM. It boasts an all-metal unibody design and accommodates 16 pins on the rear back panel for the Moto Mods. The phone has a circular rear camera module. The fingerprint sensor embedded underneath the home button on the Moto Z2 Play is now ‘redesigned’ and is slightly circular in shape. Like its predecessor, it also comes with water repellent nano-coating.
Moving on to the specifications, the Moto Z2 Play is powered by a 2.2GHz Snapdragon 626 processor paired with two RAM/storage options- 3GB RAM/32GB onboard storage and 4GB RAM/64GB internal storage. The storage can be further expanded up to 2T using microSD card. The phone runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat and comes with 4G LTE support.
The battery on the new Moto Z2 Play is downgraded presumably because of its thin design. The smartphone packs a 3000mAh battery from 3510mAh battery seen on the Moto Z Play. Motorola says that the phone will offer up to 30 hours of battery life between charges. Interestingly, the Moto Z2 Play features new voice controls which are said to provide instant information without having to touch or even unlock the phone. Besides, it also has a Night Display feature that is meant to reduce blue light emission.
As for the optics, the Moto Z2 Play sports a 12-megapixel rear camera with a 1.4-micron pixel sensor, with f/1.7 aperture, dual-LED flash, and laser dual autofocus lens. On the front, it has a 5-megapixel camera with f/2.2 aperture, wide-angle lens and a dual-LED flash. Connectivity options on the phone include- Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2, USB Type-C, 3.5mm audio jack, NFC, GPS/A-GS. Sensors on board include- accelerometer, ambient light sensor, gyroscope, magnetometer and proximity sensor. The phone will be made available in Lunar Grey and Fine Gold colour variants.
In addition to the Moto Z2 Play, Motorola has unleashed three new Moto Mods-
The TurboPower Pack delivers quick charging features to a portable mod. It comes with a 3,490mAh battery and can charge the phone up to 15W speed. This new Moto Mod is rated to charge up to 50 per cent in just 20 minutes. The TurboPower Pack Moto Mod in the US is priced at $79.99 (around Rs. 5,100).
This Moto Mod includes dual ‘control sticks’, a D-pad and four action buttons. Motorola says that the new Moto GamePad will let users transform their Moto Z phone into a handled gaming console with a simple snap. It has a 1,035mAh battery and doesn’t depend on phone’s battery for power. The Moto GamePad is priced at $79.99 (around Rs. 5,100).
SoundBoost 2 Mod
The SoundBoost 2 Mod is similar to last year’s SoundBoost when it comes about features. However, the SoundBoost 2 has now a more premium design and comes with fabric covering, and water-repellant coating. The Mod is rated to deliver 10 hours of playtime. Further the Mod works with a new app from JBL that allows users to adjust the sound on the speaker. The SoundBoost 2 Mod will be available in three colours and it is priced at $79.99 (around Rs. 5,100).
Wireless Charging Style Shell
Just like the SoundBoost 2, the Wireless Charging Style Shell also comes in a variety of colours and finishes. The Mod adds fast wireless charging of up to 10W and is priced at $39.99 (roughly Rs. 2,500).
