Samsung introduced a new device under its wearable portfolio, the Gear IconX (2018) at its Samsung IFA 2017 event in Berlin. The wireless earbuds look similar to the last year Gear IconX iteration, however, the new Gear IconX 2018 edition boasts an enhanced battery and added voice control.
The Gear IconX (2018) comes with a 5.8pi Dynamic Driver, which is supposed to offer better sound outputs. The new wireless earbuds employ a capacitive touch area along with IR blaster and an accelerometer. Samsung says that the new Gear IconX model will offer up to seven hours of standalone time on a single charge and up to five hours of play time via Bluetooth. For talk time, the Gear IconX will provide up to 4 hours of talk time. Notably each of the two earbuds carries an 82mAh battery on the inside. Android Authority notes that new Gear IconX earbuds take just 10 minutes to charge up and deliver up to an hour usage.
As we mentioned, the new Gear IconX iteration adds in Bixby and Google Assistant smart control as well. While this naturally means that users will have to carry their phone to use the voice assistant.
“With a simple tap and hold of the earbud you can use your voice to control your music or your phone – without even having it in your hand,” Samsung wrote in its press release.
As for the storage, the new earbuds offer up to 4GB worth of music with its internal storage in standalone mode. The streaming mode on the earbuds enables to control sound tracks on the playlist both offline and online. The new Gear earbuds include a personal running coach facility, automated activity tracking for usage in jogging or hiking.
The Gear IConX 2018 edition is available in Gray, Black and Pink colour option and they come along with a carrying case that house a 340mAh battery on the inside. The carrying case supports USB Type-port, but it has a USB 2.0 connection instead of the 3.0 connection. Each of the earbuds weigh 8 grams while the carrying case weighs 54.5 grams. Samsung says that the new Gear IconX 2018 earbuds will be compatible with all devices running Android 4.4+ and above and have at least 1.5GB of RAM. As far as the pricing is concerned, the IconX 2018 price and release date will be revealed in the fall this year.
Apart from the Gear IconX (2018) wireless earbuds, the South Korean tech giant also introduced two new wearable devices- the Gear Sport smartwatch and Gear Fit2 Pro fitness tracker.
