In what could be good news for those planning to purchase Hotstar subscription, Star India’s video-on-demand streaming platform will continue to offer a limited-period discount up to 49 percent for some more time at least. As a result, the annual subscription will stay at Rs 1200.
Techook has now learnt that the subscription costs are supposed to remain the same till this IPL season. Hotstar confirmed to Techook that although this is a limited period offer, they haven’t decided any deadline as such since Hotstar often introduces fresh plans.
“There is no end date as such as we keep introducing fresh plans. Be rest assured that this plan is up for grabs till IPL,” Hotstar responded to Techook’s query.
As mentioned before, Hotstar’s annual subscription now costs Rs 1200, which is a pretty decent deal. And since the monthly subscription cost now comes down to Rs 100 as opposed to Rs 199 that one needs to pay for their monthly pack. Customers end up saving Rs 1188, resulting in 49 percent discount on the annual plan.
Similarly, Hotstar’s half-yearly (Rs 894) and quarterly (Rs 498) subscription plans are now available at 25% and 16% discount respectively.
The move makes sense given that Star India has broadcasting rights of IPL tournament for 5 years. By announcing such discounts, the company is looking to gain its subscribers base by the time IPL 2018 begins.
While IPL is its trump card, Hotstar is expected to face some stiff competion from the likes of Amazon Prime, Netflix and Sony LIV. Amazon Prime subscription costs Rs 999, along with access to Prime video, Music and logistical benefits for a year, which is cheaper.
Meanwhile, Netflix is not in the ranks at all as far prices are concerned. Netflix subscription starts at Rs 500 per month. Surprisingly enough, Sony LIV annual subscription costs just Rs 499 for 12 months.
