Reliance Jio’s 4G-enabled feature phone, the Jio Phone was officially unveiled at Reliance Annual General Meeting in July this year. While major telecom operators are putting immense effort to compete with Jio Phone, Nokia’s affiliate HMD Global also seems to be joining the bandwagon.

According to reports, the Finnish company is said to be planning to launch a 4G-enabled Nokia feature phone in India soon. In an interview with Economic Times, Ajey Mehta, India VP for HMD Global said “JioPhone is going to have an impact on the segment, and there is no question about it. We are watching how this materializes. If we see a viable business proposition, we will consider it and participate.”

HMD Global just recently launched revamped Nokia 3310 3G feature phone in Australia. The classic feature phone marked its way to India in May. While the revamped feature phone now supports 3G connectivity in select region, the company has not shared any word as of when it will the handset launch in India. While 4G enabled feature phone seems to bring back the demand for smaller screen phone with durable battery life, incumbent telecom operators have also shifted their focus to set a brittle competition for the new player (Jio) in the telecom industry. Apparently, telecom major, Airtel is said to be gearing up to launch a budget-centric Android-based 4G smartphone in the first week of October for a cost of Rs 2,000. According to a report from 91Mobiles, Airtel’s 4G smartphone will run on Android Nougat 7. It will have 1GB of RAM and is likely to feature a 4-inch display and a 1500 mAh battery. Further, domestic handset maker, Micromax is also said to have teamed up with state-owned BSNL to launch its 4G feature phone bundling lucrative data offers and free voice calls.
