Google’s Pixel and Pixel XL were a ‘brilliant’ flagship pack the search giant crafted from its smartphone inventory last year. While rumours earlier have indicated the second set of Pixel smartphones to be under works, a new report has now revealed the supposed specifications of these smartphones. The Google Pixel 2 smartphones with code-name ‘taimen’ and ‘walleye’ have already made several rounds on the Internet in the past.
According to the report from XDA Developers, they claim to have got the specifications of the smartphones from a source, which has spent ‘hands-on’ time with one of the models. As per the source referred to by XDA, the Google Pixel 2 with the codename ‘taimen’ is said to feature a 5.99-inch display with a 1440p OLED panel. The device will have a smaller bezel and the OLED panel is said to be provided by the South Korean tech company, LG. Further the smartphone will have Snapdragon 835 chipset at its heart clocked at 2.45GHz and paired with 4 gigabytes of RAM.
XDA Developers suggest that the design on the Pixel 2 smartphone will remain same as that in current Pixel models with glass and metal finish, however, the glass will be near the top of the phone. The report also says that Google will integrate single rear camera with dual LED flash, unlike dual camera setup which has fairly become a trend on smartphones these days.
Coming to the smaller Pixel device code-named ‘Walleye’, the smartphone is said to feature a ‘familiar’ 4.97-inch full HD display. The report indicates that the design on this handset will remain “almost identical” to last year’s Pixel smartphone. Interestingly, Google is said to ditch 3.5mm headphone jack on this new Pixel model. The smaller Pixel 2 will also feature Snapdragon 835 processor paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage and it will have stereo speakers, as referred by the source to XDA Developers.
Earlier reports have suggested that the Google could likely scrap the ‘Pixel XL 2’ and instead opt for a larger screen phablet which is said to be manufactured by LG. However a Japanese blog refuting the Pixel XL 2 to have scrapped, outed information about the Pixel and Pixel XL 2. The reference to ‘S2’ and ‘M2’ were discovered by Japanese blog HTC Soku inside the system files of HTC’s ‘flawed’ U11 handset. ‘S1’ and ‘M1’ were the code-names of Pixel and Pixel XL respectively, so one can relate these models with code-name ‘S2’ and ‘M2’ to the new Pixel 2 devices. The S2 and M2 listing inside the HTC U11 reveals the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor to feature on these handsets. Report also suggest that the Edge Sense pressure sensitive ‘chassis’ included in the HTC phone could be integrated to the Pixel XL 2.
Google has not yet shared any detail regarding the release of the Pixel 2 series, but given its current models hold a premium pricing, the Mountain View company might tag a commensurate price on its upcoming smartphones.
