Apple this week unveiled its highly- anticipated iPhone models for the year and the table now turns towards Internet search giant Google’s next-generation Pixel smartphones. While reports earlier suggested the upcoming Pixel devices to launch on October 5, a Google billboard reveals that the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 might launch a day ahead.
A Google billboard that was put in Boston shows a date- October 4 with the tagline “Ask more of your phone”. To remind, this was the same date when the Mountain View Company introduced its first ‘Made by Google’ Pixel smartphones to the world. Droid Life, which first reported about the billboards, said to have checked with local shops to confirm whether the advertisement is about the upcoming Pixel 2 phones or the current Pixel smartphones.
While there is nothing official about these devices yet, several leaks and rumours have emerged in the past giving a fair sketch of what the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 might possibly pack-in.
As per reports, the generic version Google Pixel 2 might be constructed by Taiwanese company HTC. The smartphone is said to feature ‘Edge Sense’, the feature found in the premium flagship HTC U11. The bigger variant, Pixel XL 2 meanwhile is reported to be manufactured by LG. The smartphone is expected to feature a 6-inch OLED bezel-less display.
Recently, a report from 9to5Google have suggested that the Pixel 2 might come with IP68 water and dust resistance rating. The report also noted that the upcoming Pixel won’t retain 3.5mm audio jack and equip electronic image stabilisation (EIS) instead optical image stabilisation (OIS). Further, the handset could be announced in two storage variants- 64GB and 128GB. As for the software, Google’s latest OS version, Android 8.1 Oreo might be baked inside the upcoming Pixel smartphones.
Notably, the prolific gadget leakster Evan Blass earlier said that the next-gen Pixel handsets will be powered by Qualcomm’s unannounced Snapdragon 836 SoC. However, two major tech publications (XDA Developers & Android Police) refuting this information claimed that Qualcomm isn’t working on any Snapdragon 836 mobile platform and it doesn’t exist.
Besides the rumoured Google Pixel 2 and XL 2, the company is expected to launch Google Assistant powered headphones, a new convertible Chromebook Pixel laptop, and a smaller version of Google Home.
