Facebook’s AI-powered smart speaker with the display could be in works, according to a report by Digitimes. The social media giant is reportedly aiming to compete with the likes of Amazon Echo Show. The report says that the company is working on a connected smart speaker which will feature a 15-inch display. The report further mentioned that the company will be launching their smart speaker in the first quarter of 2018. Facebook might foray into digital assistant space with the speaker.
The report points to the fact that the speaker will be made by a Pegatron, a Taiwan based electronics manufacturer. It also mentioned that they have even kicked off a pilot production program in their factories in China. The speaker is likely to contain much more limited functionality compared with Amazon Echo Show.

The market demand for smart speakers has been steadily increasing since the release of the first Amazon Echo speaker, so it is not surprising that companies like Samsung and Facebook are trying to get into this market. However, to compete with Amazon, a company that is dominating the space, Facebook must have something unique to stand out.
