MWC 2018 till now has turned out very well with most of the brands launching new products, services and developing new partnerships. One such partnership has emerged between the Chinese smartphone manufacturer, Coolpad and Qualcomm. The partnership will help Coolpad foray into the smart wearables market.
Under this partnership, Coolpad will be manufacturing smart wearable gadgets like smartwatches powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear platform. The company has said, that their products will be focused on meeting the specific power, connectivity and location requirements of the emerging sub-segments.
“With the expansion of the wearables business using Qualcomm Technologies’ solutions, Coolpad will grow its portfolio while continuing to bring quality and affordable products to the market globally. We hope to introduce these products in India soon and further expand this portfolio in collaboration with Qualcomm,” Said Mr. Syed Tajuddin, CEO, Coolpad India.
Apart from smartwatches, Coolpad will also be launching smart trackers for pets and valuables. These trackers will make use of the Snapdragon 1100 platform. This chipset comes with a 4G LTE modem, integrated location for indoor and outdoor positioning, hardware-based security for greater protection and ultra-low power consumption.
The company also plans to launch a smartwatch for kids powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 2100 SoC. The chipset will allow the smartwatch to support 4G multi-mode with bi-directional calling and deliver location details through a combination of Wi-Fi, GPS and 4G.
In a separate development, the Chinese tech company at the global mobile & tech event announced that it will integrate Amazon’s personal assistant Alexa into certain Coolpad devices. With the ‘Coolpad Alexa’ app users will able to perform certain tasks like shopping via the e-retail site, accessing information about weather, get briefs on important news and play music just by giving voice commands. Coolpad claims to be the first to introduce Amazon Alexa integrated smartphones in India. However, the company has not mentioned as to which devices will incorporate Amazon’s intelligent voice assistant.
Commenting on the announcement, Mr Brandy Kang, Executive Vice President, Coolpad Group said, “In the case of Amazon Alexa, Coolpad will be the first Amazon exclusive smartphone brand in India, who will be providing Amazon Alexa in smartphones. Systemic progress to incorporate AI in devices is a common goal for both Coolpad and Amazon and it has brought us together, once again with Amazon Alexa.”
