Airtel has partnered a domestic handset maker Celkon to launch a new affordable 4G smartphone in India. The device in question is Celkon Smart 4G that comes at an effective price of Rs 1,349. The collaboration comes in the wake of Airtel’s ‘Mera Pehla Smartphone’ initiative. As part of the initiative, Airtel aims to partner several cell phone manufacturers across the country.
Original price of Celkon 4G Smart in India is Rs 3,500. Apps such as MyAirtel App, Wynk Music, and Airtel TV come pre-installed on the handset. Airtel also bundles Rs 169 monthly pack. Customers need to make a down payment of Rs 2,849 for a smartphone. Upon 36 consecutive recharges of Rs 169, customers will receive a cash refund of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 after 18 and 36 months respectively.
Users who do not wish to subscribe to this Rs 169 plan may select any other plan according to their requirements. However, they need to opt for recharges worth Rs 3,000 within first 18 months in order to avail refund benefits.
Specs-wise, Celkon 4G Smart sports a 4-inch screen. Inside is 1GB of RAM and 8GB of expandable storage (up to 32GB). The device runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow and packs a 1,500mAh battery under the hood. Powering the handset is a 1.3GHz quad-core processor. It houses a 3.2-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel selfie camera. Last but not least, it supports 4G with VoLTE.
Commenting on the launch, Airtel’s Raj Pudipeddi had this to say:
“We are pleased to partner with Celkon in our endeavour to bring affordable smartphone options to the market and build an ‘open ecosystem’ of low-cost devices. Celkon has a strong brand affinity and deep distribution in southern Indian markets, and our partnership will enable us to serve a large set of customers with this affordable smartphone proposition.”
According to Airtel, ‘Mera Pehla Smartphone’ initiative has managed to capture the positive response from customers. As a result, the company is likely to partner to more OEMs in the near future.
