While OEMs are shifting their focus from offering just good hardware and software internals to a radically designed premium smartphone, there are certain companies that emphasise in delivering intrinsically safe smartphone. One such company is the US-based Bullitt Mobile that brings smartphones that meet military standard specifications for shock, dust, rain, solar radiation etc. The construction machinery manufacturing company has now unveiled two smartphones and a tablet under its brand Cat (aka Caterpillar) at the ongoing IFA 2017 event in Berlin.
The company has launched the Cat S41 and S31 smartphones that feature a rugged build water and dust resistance, military grade protection and massive batteries. These rugged smartphones are the first from the company to run Android Nougat out-of-the-box.
Talking about the rugged specifications of these handsets, the Cat S31 come with IP68 certification which means that the phone will be able to survive if it is under water for up to 35 minutes. The phone will also operate if you use it with gloves on or wet finger. As for the screen size, it has a 4.7-inch full HD display with a resolution of 720×1280 pixels. The rugged Cat smartphone has passed MIL-STD 810G standard test and will work even if it drops from 1.8 metres down to the floor. The phone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 quad-core processor paired with 2GB of RAM and 16GB internal memory further expandable with microSD card up to 128GB.
As for the optics, it sports an 8-megapixel camera with AF and LED flash. The Cat S31 has a 2-megapixel camera in the front. It has a battery capacity of 4000mAh and weighs 200 grams.
The Cat S41 meanwhile, features a 5-inch full-HD (1080x 1920 pixels) IPS display with auto switch support and has wet finger and glove support as well. It is powered by a MediaTek Helio P20 MT6757 octa-core processor clocked at 2.3GHz and paired with 3GB of RAM. The phone offers 32GB native storage which is expandable up to 2TB via microSD slot. Bullitt claims that the Cat S41 is ‘beyond IP68 certified’, and can survive immersion in up to 2 metres of water for up to 1 hour, and can work if it falls up to 1.8 metres on concrete. Like the CatS31 it has also passed the MIL-STD 810G certification. The Cat S41 comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection on top of its display.
In terms of imaging, it sports a 13-megapixel rear sensor with PDAF, and LED flash. At the front, it has an 8-megapixel fixed focus camera.
The Cat S41 packs a behemoth size 5000mAh battery that is rated to offer up to 38 hours of talk time on 3G network, and 44 days of standby time. It also comes with battery sharing feature that will let users charge other devices. Connectivity options on the phone include- 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1, Micro-USB port with OTG support, FM radio, 3.5mm audio jack, and GPS/ A-GPS. Sensors onboard include accelerometer, ambient light sensor, digital compass, and proximity sensor.
Bullitt has also launched a tablet, Cat T20 alongside these smartphones that feature a rugged design. The phone runs Windows 10 and sports an 8-inch (800×1280 resolution) IPS LCD display with Gorilla Glass protection. It is powered by a 1.44GHz quad-core Intel Atom Z8350 processor paired with 2GB of RAM and 64GB internal storage.
As for the optics, the Cat T20 carries a 5-megapixel primary camera and a 2-megapixel front facing camera. It packs a 7500mAh battery and offers Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1, mini-HDMI, USB 3.0, GPS, GLONASS, and 4G LTE support.
As far as the pricing and availability is concerned the Cat S31 is priced at GBP 299 (roughly Rs. 24,700), while the Cat S41 is priced at GBP 399 (roughly Rs. 32,900). The S41 is already listed on the company’s website, while the S31 will be made available sometime later this year. The Cat T20 tablet is priced at GBP 599 (roughly Rs. 49,500), however information regarding the availablity of the tablet has not been mentioned.
