Asus has officially unveiled the ZenFone AR and ZenFone 3 Zoom smartphones at CES, 2017. Jonney Shih, the Chairman of the company revealed the two smartphones during the Zennovation press event in Las Vegas.
The ZenFone AR is claimed to be the world’s first Tango-enabled and Daydream enabled smartphone. Tango basically is a set of sensors and computer vision software introduced by Google that enables unique AR experience to the users on their smartphone. Daydream, on the other hand is Google’s virtual reality platform for Android that deliver high quality, mobile virtual reality. ZenFone at the press event said that it has worked in ‘close cooperation’ with Google to ensure the smartphone delivers best Google Tango and Daydream experience.
Zenfone AR is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor and 8GB of RAM, optimized primarily to enable smooth augmented experience for the users. Cristiano Amon, the Executive Vice President of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., said, “The Snapdragon 821 processor is a perfect fit for a flagship Tango-enabled device like the ZenFone AR. You need a powerful heterogenous computing and power-efficient chip to handle the intensive processing and complex features needed to optimize and deliver rich augmented reality.”
The smartphone features a 5.7-inch WQHD (2560×1440 resolution) Super AMOLED display which brings enhanced experience while viewing content in VR.
As it is a Tango-enabled smartphone, the ZenFone AR features three cameras that is clustered by Asus own TriCam system. The primary camera consists of a23MP Sony IMX 318 sensor with OIS and 4K video recording support, the other two comprise of motion-tracking and depth sensing.
The ZenFone AR also host an external five magnet speaker that supports Hi-Res audio and DTS virtual surround sound. It runs on Android Nougat 7.0 out-of-the box featuring multitasking and other improvements.
Asus ZenFone 3 Zoom meanwhile is a smartphone designed for camera enthusiasts. It features a dual camera system comprising 12-megapixel sensors, one with 25mm wide-angle lens and f/1.7 aperture, the other with 56mm lens for 2.3x zoom. The improved TriTech+ autofocus system can automatically select among three autofocus technologies- Dual Pixel PDAF, subject tracking autofocus and second generation laser focus. With Super Pixel technology, the ZenFone 3 will be the Asus first smartphone to capture quick-focus shots and clear images at night or in low light. The device sports a 5.5-inch FHD display with Gorilla Glass 5 protection. Under the hood it has Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor. The device will have different RAM and storage configurations. Unlike ZenFone AR which has the latest Android Nougat 7.0, ZenFone 3 Zoom runs on Android Marshmallow 6.0.
Asus touts ZenFone 3 Zoom to be the world’s thinnest and lightest smartphone. The ‘super-slim’ phone sports 7.9mm full metal body and weighs 170 grams. It has a high capacity 5000mAh battery which as the company claims will give prolonged usage time and allow user to capture up to 6.4 hours of continuous 4K UHD video on a single charge.
ZenFone 3 Zoom will be available in February, 2017 followed by ZenFone AR in Q2, 2017. Asus however, has not cited any pricing details of the smartphones yet.
