Apple, back in March, launched the 9.7-inch iPad priced at $329 (Approximately Rs 21,200), which currently is the cheapest full-sized iPad available in the market. Today, a new report by Digitimes has surfaced stating, Apple might announce a 9.7-inch iPad at $259 (Approximately Rs 16,700) in 2018.
In the report, Digitimes states that this new launch will be a bid by Apple to get into the higher-volume and price-conscious markets. This might, in turn, revive the sales of the iPad, which have been falling since 2014. If this report is true, this alleged iPad may become the cheapest tablet Apple has ever offered to the public.
Currently, we don’t know if this supposed 9.7-inch iPad will be a replacement for the 2017 9.7-inch iPad, or will it just be a newer variant with watered down specifications, with a similar design and an improved camera sensor.
The report also states that this new iPad will be manufactured by Compal Electronics, one of Apple’s current suppliers for the iPads. The device is expected to launch in the second half of 2018. It will be targeted towards budget-conscious people providing them with a cheap iOS alternative to the budget Android tablets currently available in the market.
Apple or Compal Electronics haven’t yet issued any statements confirming the report. However, we do feel that this report might just be true, as Apple is trying to gain a strong foothold in emerging markets like India, where pricing does play a key role for the majority of potential buyers.
