Design & Build

The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 has an anodised aluminum build with a metal chassis surrounding the edges of the device. The phone looks identical to the original Mi Max smartphone and brings just a few hardware and software upgrade over its predecessor.

The Mi Max 2 comes with 2.5D curved glass protection at front and smooth corners. The volume keys and power button are placed on the same right edge as the original Mi Max smartphone. The antenna lines however now run along the curvature instead on top of and bottom of the back panel as seen on the Mi Max. The capacitive navigation keys and home button on the phone are backlit. The hybrid dual-SIM tray is located on the left edge. At the top of the front panel you have the microphone, front-facing camera on the right side and LED notification light alongside. Around the back, there is the fingerprint sensor placed in the center, the primary camera module sits on the left side along with the dual-tone LED flash. The Mi Max 2 retains the 3.5mm headphone jack which is located at the top of the device. The successor to the Mi Max this time has got USB-type C port instead of micro-USB 2.0 which makes sense given that it packs a behemoth size battery. The symmetrical speaker grills are put on either side of the charging port at the bottom.

Overall, the Mi Max 2 offers an elegant look with a premium design and sturdy build. The phone is 7.6mm thick, and it commendable on Xiaomi’s part to bring a sleek smartphone with a mammoth size battery packed inside it . The phone weighs at around 211 grams, but it’s not that heavy if you get two hands to have a good grip over the phone. However, the aluminum finish makes the phone a tad bit slippery and the fingerprint sensor is difficult to reach if you have smaller hands.  Since it is a phablet, it is obvious that the smartphone would be large in size. While many might not feel comfortable to hold the handset, one will have to compromise if they prefer a bigger screen to carry their day-to-day task. But to say, the Mi Max 2 carries a more refined design and neat look compared to original Mi Max handset.
