It has been over a week since OnePlus 5 launched globally, and the company claimed it to be the best smartphone they have ever launched. It seems like OnePlus has retained the 1080p AMOLED display it used on the OnePlus 3T, but added the DCI-P3 wide colour gamut profile to the OnePlus 5. This is the colour profile that is used to shoot and display 4K content.

A twitter leakster used AIDA64 to find out that the OnePlus 5 uses the Samsung S6E3FA5 display, and the OnePlus 3T uses either a Samsung S6E3FA5 or S6E3FA3 display. This discovery made a few curious OnePlus 3T users dig into the kernel to find out if they could find a way to enable the DCI-P3 colour profile on the phone, and to no one’s surprise, they did.

The users found 3 files in the /sys/devices/virtual/graphics/fb0 directory which can be edited to enable the colour profile. The files that need to be modified are as follows.

  • /sys/devices/virtual/graphics/fb0/SRGB
  • /sys/devices/virtual/graphics/fb0/Adobe_RBG
  • /sys/devices/virtual/graphics/fb0/DCI_P3

The OnePlus 3T users with the Samsung S6E3FA5 display and root access can change the value in the DCI_P3 file from 0 to 1, to enjoy the colour profile of the OnePlus 5 now.

How to Enable the DCI-P3 colour gamut for the OnePlus 3T: Step by Step

These instructions will only work on a rooted OnePlus 3T device with the Samsung S6E3FA5 display.

Step1:
Install AIDA64 app through the Google Play Store. After which you will need to check in the app if your Panel ID reads “Samsung s6e3fa51080p cmd mode DSI panel”. If yes then your device supports the DCI-P3 colour gamut.

Step 2:
Now, install Terminal Emulator on your OnePlus 3T and enter following commands. ->SU ->echo 1 > /sys/devices/virtual/graphics/fb0/DCI_P3

Note: The changes have now taken place, but you cannot see them in the settings. For now, if you want to revert the changes restart the device and they will revert to default.

If you want the changes to be permanent, you can use an automation software like Tasker to create an init.d script or you can visit XDA Forum and use the Magisk Module made by an XDA member doubleaykay.
